Commission Tables St. Joe County Ordinance Requiring Carbon Monoxide Detectors

The St. Joseph County request to require carbon monoxide detectors in some buildings was tabled today (Tuesday), by the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission during its monthly meeting.

Buildings impacted would be those where people live or stay like hotels, nursing homes and rental properties, but not private residences. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can be toxic or deadly.

The Commission said in a statement they need more time to review the proposed ordinance.

Michigan City’s request for a similar ordinance was denied. The city council needs to review and approve the revised ordinance before the Commission will vote on it.

The state of Indiana is one of few states that doesn’t require carbon monoxide detectors.
