Last week students in Elkhart Community Schools voted on the new name and mascot for the merged high school.
Today officials released those names. They are the Elkhart Alliance High School Elks (black, silver). The Elkhart Community High School Express (black, white, royal blue). The Elkhart High School Jaguars (red, navy blue, gold). The Elkhart United High School Mangy Lions (red, white, navy blue). And The Heartland High School Thundering Herd (royal blue, gold).
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade had one classroom vote chosen by classroom poll. Students sixth grade and up had one vote each. Their decision will be announced at the regularly scheduled school board meeting on June 12th.
The top five were picked by a naming committee after community meeting yielded more than 800 suggestions.
Elkhart’s two high schools are merging as part of the Elkhart Promise plan which will also create a new freshman academy and curriculum pathways among other changes.
