Former South Bend Police Chief Intends To Run For St. Joseph County Sheriff

Former South Bend Police Chief Chuck Hurley has said he intends to run for St. Joseph County Sheriff.

Hurley spoke Monday night at a meeting for the Howard Park/East bank Neighborhood Association.

The South Bend Tribune Reports he decided to run because he felt Democratic candidate Bill Redman and Republican candidate Paul Jonas do not have the executive experience necessary for the job.

Bill Redman is currently the Democratic candidate though runner up Tim Corbett has filed for a recount after the results from the May primary put him 18 votes behind Redman.

Hurley will run as an independent. He previously served two terms as South Bend’s Police Chief starting in 1984 and as interim police chief in 2012. He has also served on the Notre Dame Security Police and as deputy and head coroner for St. Joseph County.

Hurley must file a petition with at least 1,142 signatures from registered St. Joseph County voters by July 2nd to run.
