The Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan will be under construction this summer as they completely revamp their space.

Most of the changes at Krasl are happening outside. The center is located on the bluff in St. Joe. Currently a lot of their outdoor space is taken up by parking.

Executive director Julia Gourley said that’s going to change, “So we’re taking over some of that parking area and getting rid of a drive off lake boulevard and making that a plaza where people can gather.”

They’re also leveling some of the lot to add more flat usable space. They’ve commissioned a sculpture by Richard Hunt, which will be accompanied outside by a rotating contingent of other art.

And the center’s iconic hippo sculpture ‘Lotus’ will return as well. “Lotus is currently in hibernation," Gourley said. "And she’ll be coming out of hibernation by the end of the summer and she will have a prime spot back here at the Krasl Art Center on our grounds.”

The $1.7 million project is funded through community donations and grants from the First Source Bank Foundation and the Fredrick S. Upton Foundation.

The construction won’t impact normal hours at the center or the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff, which takes place the second weekend in July.
