Marshall, Elkhart County Law Enforcement Respond to Explosives

Elkhart Police Department

Indiana State Police responded to two different instances of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, in Marshall County yesterday. The Elkhart County Sheriff's deputies responded to a third call yesterday in Goshen as well.

State Troopers were called to the scene of the first IED around 11 a.m. and then called to a second scene around 1 p.m. when a mail carrier opened a mailbox and found another IED. Both incidents occurred in Plymouth.

In Goshen, Sheriff's deputies responded to a call where a woman found a pipe bomb in her front yard. The Elkhart Police Department Bomb Unit was called to assist the Sheriff's Department in retrieving the device.

No injuries were reported in any of the three cases.

Sgt. Bohner with the Indiana State Police said the devices were not mailed and are not something that can be confused with mail.

“If you do see something in your mailbox that could be something like this, don’t touch this, don’t move it. Get to a safe place and call 9-1-1,” Bohner said.

Bonner said authorities don’t know if the devices have any connection and are still investigating.
