For 600 years, the “Four Books” formed the basis of the Chinese educational system. A literate person would commit the “Doctrine of the Mean,” “Great Learning,” “Mencius,” and “Analects” to memory. The four are guides to moral cultivation and civil responsibility, often through vivid, humorous stories. We will explore selections for insight into classical Chinese culture and also to gain perspective on our own. Richard Allen taught “Classical Chinese Philosophy” at IUSB.
