Rainfall might cause issues with unharvested crops

corn in the field

In the last few days Michiana has gotten between three and six inches of rain. The rain hit as many farmers are harvesting fall crops.

The deluge of rain across the area for the last two days has created some issues for local farmers who still have crops to harvest.

Jeff Burbrink is an agricultural educator with the Purdue Extension Service. He says crops still in the fields could face problems.

“Your crops can begin to get so wet that they begin to get fungi and begin to break down so you start to be worried about things like stalk rots in corn or mold conditions in corn and soybeans and that can be a concern especially when it stays wet all the time.”

Burbrink says most crops have been harvested already, but those left tend to be in the wettest fields. He says it’s been a weird season.

“We’re three to six inches above the norm for just this month. It’s been a really interesting season. It’s been very variable and when you have odd variation like that in the weather, it tends to give you some odd things happening in crops.”

He says farmers will have to wait for fields to dry out more so equipment doesn’t destroy them.
